Proverbs
Chapter 1
1:1The Parables of Solomon the son of David King of Israel,
1:2To know wisdom, and instruction, to understand the words of knowledge,
1:3To receive instruction to do wisely, by justice and judgment and equity,
1:4To give to the simple, sharpness of wit,and to the child knowledge and discretion.
1:5[A] wise man shall hear and increase in learning, and [a] man of understanding shall attain to wise counsels,
1:6To understand [a] parable, and the interpretation, the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
1:7The fear of YHWH is the beginning of knowledge:but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
1:8My son, hear your fathers instruction, and forsake not your mothers teaching.
1:9For they shall be [a] comely ornament to your head, and as chains for your neck.
1:10My son, if sinners do entice you, consent you not.
1:11If they say, Come with us, we will lay wait for blood, and lie privily for the innocent without [a] cause:
1:12We will swallow them up alive like [a] grave even whole, as those that go down into the pit:
1:13We shall find all precious riches, and fill our houses with spoil:
1:14Cast in your lot among us:we will all have one purse:
1:15My son, walk not you in the way with them:refrain your foot from their path.
1:16For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.
1:17Certainly as without cause the net is spread before the eyes of all that has wing:
1:18So they lay wait for blood and lie privily for their lives.
1:19Such are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain:he would take away the life of the owners thereof.
1:20Wisdom cries without:she utters her voice in the streets.
1:21She calls in the high street, among the press in the entrances of the gates, and utters her words in the city, saying,
1:22O you foolish, how long will you love foolishness? And the scornful take their pleasure in scorning, and the fools hate knowledge?
1:23(Turn you at my correction:lo, [I] will pour out my mind to you,and make you understand my words)
1:24Because [I] have called, and you refused:[I] have stretched out my hand, and none would regard.
1:25But you have despised all my counsel, and would none of my correction.
1:26[I] will also laugh at your destruction, and mock, when your fear comes.
1:27When your fear comes like sudden desolation, and your destruction shall come like [a] whirl wind:when affliction and anguish shall come upon you,
1:28Then shall they call upon me,but [I] will not answer:they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me,
1:29Because they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of YHWH.
1:30They would none of my counsel, but despised all my correction.
1:31Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way,and be filled with their own devises.
1:32For ease slays the foolish, and the prosperity of fools destroys them.
1:33But he that be me, shall dwell safely, and be quiet from fear of evil.
Chapter 2
2:1My son, if you will receive my words, and hide my commandments within you,
2:2And cause your ears to hearken to wisdom, and incline your heart to understanding,
2:3(For if you call after knowledge, and cry for understanding:
2:4If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for treasures,
2:5Then shall you understand the fear of YHWH,and find the knowledge of Elohim.
2:6For YHWH gives wisdom, out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.
2:7He preserves the state of the righteous:he is [a] shield to them that walk uprightly,
2:8That they may keep the ways of judgment:and he preserves the way of his Saints)
2:9Then shall you understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity, and every good path.
2:10When wisdom enters into your heart, and knowledge delights your soul,
2:11Then shall counsel preserve you,and understanding shall keep you,
2:12And deliver you from the evil way,and from the man that speaks froward things,
2:13And from them that leave the ways of righteousness to walk in the ways of darkness:
2:14Which rejoice in doing evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked,
2:15Whose ways are crooked and they are lewd in their paths.
2:16And it shall deliver you from the strange woman, even from the stranger, which flatters with her words.
2:17Which forsakes the guide of her youth, and forgets the covenant of her Elohim.
2:18Surely her house tends to death, and her paths to the dead.
2:19All they that go to her, return not again, neither take they hold of the ways of life.
2:20Therefore walk you in the way of good men,and keep the ways of the righteous.
2:21For the just shall dwell in the land, and the upright men shall remain in it.
2:22But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressours shall be rooted out of it.
Chapter 3
3:1My son, forget not you my Law,but let your heart keep my commandments.
3:2For they shall increase the length of your days and the years of life, and your prosperity.
3:3Let not mercy and truth forsake you:bind them on your neck, and write them upon the table of your heart.
3:4So shall you find favor and good understanding in the sight of Elohim and man.
3:5Trust in YHWH with all your heart, and lean not to your own wisdom.
3:6In all your ways acknowledge him,and he shall direct your ways.
3:7Be not wise in your own eyes:but fear YHWH,and depart from evil.
3:8So health shall be to your navel, and marrow to your bones.
3:9Honor YHWH with your riches, and with the first fruits of all your increase.
3:10So shall your barns be filled with abundance, and your presses shall burst with new wine.
3:11My son, refuse not the chastening of YHWH,neither be grieved with his correction.
3:12For YHWH corrects him, whom he loves, even as the father does the child in whom he delights.
3:13Blessed is the man that finds wisdom, and the man that gets understanding.
3:14For the merchandise thereof is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof is better than gold.
3:15It is more precious than pearls:and all things that you can desire, are not to be compared to her.
3:16Length of days is in her right hand, and in her left hand riches and glory.
3:17Her ways are ways of pleasure, and all her paths prosperity.
3:18She is [a] tree of life to them that lay hold on her,and blessed is he that retains her.
3:19YHWH by wisdom has laid the foundation of the earth, and has established the heavens through understanding.
3:20By his knowledge the depths are broken up,and the clouds drop down the dew.
3:21My son, let not these things depart from your eyes, but observe wisdom, and counsel.
3:22So they shall be life to your soul, and grace to your neck.
3:23Then shall you walk safely by your way:and your foot shall not stumble.
3:24If you sleep, you shall not be afraid, and when you sleep, your sleep shall be sweet.
3:25You shall not fear for any sudden fear, neither for the destruction of the wicked, when it comes.
3:26For YHWH shall be for your assurance, and shall preserve your foot from taking.
3:27Withhold not the good from the owners thereof, though there be power in your hand to do it.
3:28Say not to your neighbor, Go and come again, and to ow will [I] give you, if you now have it.
3:29Intend none hurt against your neighbor, seeing he does dwell without fear by you.
3:30Strive not with [a] man causeless, when he has done you no harm.
3:31Be not envious for the wicked man, neither choose any of his ways.
3:32For the froward is abomination to YHWH:but his secret is with the righteous.
3:33The curse of YHWH is in the house of the wicked:but he blesses the habitation of the righteous.
3:34With the scornful he scorns, but he gives grace to the humble.
3:35The wise shall inherit glory:but fools dishonour, though they be exalted.
Chapter 4
4:1Hear, O you children, the instruction of [a] father, and give ear to learn understanding.
4:2For [I] do give you [a] good doctrine:therefore forsake you not my law.
4:3For I was my fathers son, tender and dear in the sight of my mother,
4:4When he taught me,and said to me, Let your heart hold fast my words:keep my commandments, and you shall live.
4:5Get wisdom:get understanding:forget not, neither decline from the words of my mouth.
4:6Forsake her not,and she shall keep you:love her and she shall preserve you.
4:7Wisdom is the beginning:get wisdom therefore:and above all your possession get understanding.
4:8Exalt her,and she shall exalt you:she shall bring you to honor, if you embrace her.
4:9She shall give [a] comely ornament to your head, yes, she shall give you [a] crown of glory.
4:10Hear, my son,and receive my words, and the years of your life shall be many.
4:11[I] have taught you in the way of wisdom, and led you in the paths of righteousness.
4:12When you go, your gate shall not be strait, and when you run, you shall not fall.
4:13Take hold of instruction, and leave not:keep her,for she is your life.
4:14Enter not into the way of the wicked, and walk not in the way of evil men.
4:15Avoid it,and go not by it:turn from it,and pass by.
4:16For they can not sleep, except they have done evil, and their sleep departs except they cause some to fall.
4:17For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.
4:18But the way of the righteous shines as the light, that shines more and more to the perfect day.
4:19The way of the wicked is as the darkness:they know not wherein they shall fall.
4:20My son, hearken to my words, incline your ear to my sayings.
4:21Let them not depart from your eyes, but keep them in the midst of your heart.
4:22For they are life to those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
4:23Keep your heart with all diligence:for heart comes life.
4:24Put away from you [a] froward mouth, and put wicked lips far from you.
4:25Let your eyes behold the right, and let your eyelids direct your way before you.
4:26Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be ponder aright.
4:27Turn not to the right hand, nor to the left, but remove your foot from evil.
Chapter 5
5:1My son, hearken to my wisdom, and incline your ear to my knowledge.
5:2That you may regard counsel, and your lips observe knowledge.
5:3For the lips of [a] strange woman drop as [a] honey combe, and her mouth is more soft than oil.
5:4But the end of her is bitter as wormwood, and sharp as [a] two edged sword.
5:5Her feet go down to death, and her steps take hold on hell.
5:6She weighs not the way of life:her paths are movable:you can not know them.
5:7Hear you me now therefore, O children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.
5:8Keep your way far from her,and come not near the door of her house,
5:9Lest you give your honor to others, and your years to the cruel:
5:10Lest the stranger should be filled with your strength, and your labors be in the house of [a] stranger,
5:11And you mourn at your end, (when you have consumed your flesh and your body)
5:12And say, How have [I] hated instruction, and my heart despised correction!
5:13And have not obeyed the voice of them that taught me, nor inclined my ear to them that instructed me!
5:14I was almost brought into all evil in you midst of the Congregation and assembly.
5:15Drink the water of your cistern, and of the rivers out of the midst of your own well.
5:16Let your fountains flow forth, and the rivers of waters in the streets.
5:17But let them be yours, even your only, and not the strangers with you.
5:18Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice with the wife of your youth.
5:19Let her be as the loving her and pleasant roe:let her breasts satisfy you at all times, and delight in her love continually.
5:20For why should you delight, my son, in [a] strange woman, or embrace the bosom of [a] stranger?
5:21For the ways of man are before the eyes of YHWH,and he ponders all his paths.
5:22His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his own sin.
5:23He shall die for fault of instruction, and shall go astray through his great folly.
Chapter 6
6:1My son, if you be surety for your neighbor, and have stricken hands with the stranger,
6:2You are snared with the words of your mouth:you are even taken with the words of your own mouth.
6:3Do this now, my son,and deliver yourself:seeing you are come into the hand of your neighbor, go,and humble yourself, and solicit your friends.
6:4Give no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids.
6:5Deliver yourself as [a] do from the hand of the hunter, and as [a] bird from the hand of the fouler.
6:6Go to the pismire, O sluggard:behold her ways, and be wise.
6:7For she having no guide, governor, nor ruler,
6:8Harvest her meat in the summer, and gathers her food in harvest.
6:9How long will you sleep, O sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep?
6:10Yet [a] little sleep, [a] little slumber, [a] little folding of the hands to sleep.
6:11Therefore your poverty comes as one that travails by the way,and your necessity like an armed man.
6:12The unthrifty man and the wicked man walks with [a] froward mouth.
6:13He makes [a] sign with his eyes:he signifis with his feet:he instructs with his fingers.
6:14Lewd things are in his heart:he imagins evil at all times, and raises up contentions.
6:15Therefore shall his destruction come speedily:he shall be destroyed suddenly without recovery.
6:16These six things does YHWH hate:yes, his soul abhorrs seven:
6:17The haughty eyes, [a] lying tongue, and the hands that shed innocent blood,
6:18An heart that plans wicked enterprises, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
6:19[A] false witness that speaks lies, and him that raises up contentions among brethren.
6:20My son, keep your fathers commandment, and forsake not your mothers instruction.
6:21Bind them always upon your heart, and tie them about your neck.
6:22It shall lead you, when you walk:it shall watch for you, when you sleep, and when you wake, it shall talk with you.
6:23For the commandment is [a] lantern, and instruction [a] light:and corrections for instruction are the way of life,
6:24To keep you from the wicked woman, and from you flattery of the tongue of [a] strange woman.
6:25Desire not her beauty in your heart, neither let her take you with her eye lids.
6:26For because of the whorish woman [a] man is brought to [a] morsel of bread, and [a] woman will hunt for the precious life of [a] man.
6:27Can [a] man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burnt?
6:28Or can [a] man go upon coals, and his feet not be burnt?
6:29So he that goes in to his neighbors wife, shall not be innocent, whoever touches her.
6:30Men do not despise [a] thief, when he steals, to satisfy his soul, because he is hungry.
6:31But if he be found, he shall restore seven fold, or he shall give all the substance of his house.
6:32But he that commits adultery with [a] woman, he is destitute of understanding:he that does it, destroys his own soul.
6:33He shall find [a] wound and dishonor, and his reproach shall never be put away.
6:34For jealousy is the rage of [a] man:therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
6:35He cannot bear the sight of any ransom:neither will he consent, though you augment the gifts.
Chapter 7
7:1My son, keep my words, and hide my commandments with you.
7:2Keep my commandments, and you shall live, and my instruction as the apple of your eyes.
7:3Bind them upon your fingers, and write them upon the table of your heart.
7:4Say to wisdom, You are my sister:and call understanding your kinswoman,
7:5That they may keep you from the strange woman, even from the stranger that is smooth in her words.
7:6As [I] was in the window of my house, [I] looked through my window,
7:7And [I] saw among the fools, and considered among the children [a] young man destitute of understanding,
7:8Who passed through the street by her corner, and went toward her house,
7:9In the twilight in the evening, when the night began to be black and dark.
7:10And behold, there met him [a] woman with [a] harlot's behavior, and subtle in heart.
7:11(She is babling and loud:whose feet can not abide in her house.
7:12Now she is without, now in the streets, and lies in wait at every corner)
7:13So she caught him and kissed him and with an impudent face said to him,
7:14[I] have peace offerings:this day have [I] paid my vows.
7:15Therefore came [I] forth to meet you, that [I] might seek your face:and [I] have found you.
7:16[I] have deckt my bed with ornaments, carpets and laces of Egypt.
7:17[I] have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
7:18Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning:let us take our pleasure in dalliance.
7:19For my husband is not at home:he is gone [a] journey far off.
7:20He has taken with him [a] bag of silver, and will come home at the day appointed.
7:21Thus with her great craft she caused him to yield, and with her flattering lips she enticing him.
7:22And he followed her straight ways, as an ox that goes to the slaughter, and as [a] fool to the stocks for correction,
7:23Till [a] dart strike through his liver, as [a] bird hastens to the snare, not knowing that he is in danger.
7:24Hear me now therefore, O children, and hearken to the words of my mouth.
7:25Let not your heart decline to her ways:wander you not in her paths.
7:26For she has caused many to fall down wounded, and the strong men are all slain by her.
7:27Her house is the way to you grave, which goes down to the chambers of death.
Chapter 8
8:1Does not wisdom cry? And understanding utter her voice?
8:2She stands in the top of the high places by the way in the place of the paths.
8:3She cries besides the gates before the city at the entry of the doors,
8:4O men, [I] call to you,and utter my voice to the children of men.
8:5O you foolish men, understand wisdom, and you, O fools, be wise in heart.
8:6Give ear,for [I] will speak of excellent things, and the opening of my lips, shall teach things that be right.
8:7For my mouth shall speak the truth, and my lips abhor wickedness.
8:8All the words of my mouth are righteous:there is no lewdness, nor frowardness in them.
8:9They are all plain to him that will understand, and straight to them that would find knowledge.
8:10Receive my instruction, and not silver, and knowledge rather than fine gold.
8:11For wisdom is better than precious stones:and all pleasures are not to be compared to her.
8:12[I] wisdom dwell with prudence, and [I] find forth knowledge and counsels.
8:13The fear of YHWH is to hate evil as pride, and arrogance, and the evil way:and [a] mouth that speaks lewd things, [I] do hate.
8:14[I] have counsel and wisdom:[I] am understanding, and [I] have strength.
8:15By me, Kings reign, and princes decree justice.
8:16By me princes rule and the nobles, and all the Judges of the earth.
8:17[I] love them that love me:and they that seek me early, shall find me.
8:18Riches and honor are with me:even durable riches and righteousness.
8:19My fruit is better than gold, even than fine gold, and my revenues better than fine silver.
8:20[I] cause to walk in the way of righteousness, and in the midst of the paths of judgment,
8:21That [I] may cause them that love me, to inherit substance, and [I] will fill their treasures.
8:22YHWH has possessed me in the beginning of his way:[I] was before his works of old.
8:23[I] was set up from everlasting, from the beginning and before the earth.
8:24When there were no depths, was [I] begotten, when there were no fountains abounding with water.
8:25Before the mountains were settled:and before the hills, was [I] begotten.
8:26He had not yet made the earth, nor the open places, nor the height of the dust in the world.
8:27When he prepared the heavens, [I] was there, when he set the compass upon the deep.
8:28When he established the clouds above, when he confirmed the fountains of the deep,
8:29When he gave his decree to the Sea,that the waters should not pass his commandment:when he appointed the foundations of the earth,
8:30Then was [I] with him as [a] nourisher, and [I] was daily his delight rejoicing always before him,
8:31And took my solace in the compass of his earth:and my delight is with the children of men.
8:32Therefore now hearken, O children, to me:for blessed are they that keep my ways.
8:33Hear instruction, and be the wise, and refuse it not:blessed is the man that hears me, watching daily at my gates, and giving attendance at the posts of my doors.
8:34For he that finds me, finds life, and shall obtain favor of the Lord.
8:35But he that sins against me, hurts his own soul:and all that hate me, love death.
Chapter 9
9:1Wisdom has built her house, and hewn out her seven pillars.
9:2She has killed her victuals, drawn her wine, and prepared her table.
9:3She has sent forth her maidens and cries upon the highest places of the city, saying,
9:4Who so is simple, let him come here, and to him that is destitute of wisdom, she says,
9:5Come,and eat of my meat, and drink of the wine that [I] have drawn.
9:6Forsake your way, you foolish, and you shall live:and walk in the way of understanding.
9:7He that reproves [a] scorner, purchass to himself shame:and he that rebukes the wicked, gets himself [a] blot.
9:8Rebuke not [a] scorner, lest he hate you:but rebuke [a] wise man,and he will love you.
9:9Give admonition to the wise, and he will be the wiser:teach [a] righteous man,and he will increase in learning.
9:10The beginning of wisdom is the fear of YHWH,and the knowledge of holy things, is understanding.
9:11For your days shall be multiplied by me,and the years of your life shall be augmented.
9:12If you be wise, you shall be wise for yourself, and if you be [a] scorner, you alone shall suffer.
9:13[A] foolish woman is troublesome:she is ignorant, and knows nothing.
9:14But she sits at the door of her house on [a] seat in the high places of the city,
9:15To call them that pass by the way, that go right on their way, saying,
9:16Who so is simple, let him come here, and to him that is destitute of wisdom, she says also,
9:17Stolen waters are sweet, and hid bread is pleasant.
9:18But he knows not, that the dead are there, and that her guests are in the depth of hell.
Chapter 10
10:1THE PARABLE OF SALOMON. [A] wise son makes [a] glad father:but [a] foolish son is [a] heaviness to his mother.
10:2The treasures of wickedness profit nothing:but righteousness delivers from death.
10:3YHWH will not famish the soul of the righteous:but he casts away the substance of the wicked.
10:4[A] slothful hand makes poor:but the hand of the diligent makes rich.
10:5He that gathers in summer, is the son of wisdom:but he that sleeps in harvest, is the son of confusion.
10:6Blessings are upon the head of the righteous:but iniquity shall cover the mouth of the wicked.
10:7The memorial of the just shall be blessed:but the name of the wicked shall rot.
10:8The wise in heart will receive commandments:but the foolish in talk shall be beaten.
10:9He that walks uprightly, walks boldely:but he that perverts his ways, shall be known.
10:10He that winks with the eye, works sorrow, and he yet is foolish in talk, shall be beaten.
10:11The mouth of [a] righteous man is [a] welspring of life:but iniquity covers the mouth of the wicked.
10:12Hatred stirs up contentions:but love covers all trespasses.
10:13In the lips of him that has understanding wisdom is found, and [a] rod shall be for the back of him that is destitute of wisdom.
10:14Wise men lay up knowledge:but the mouth of the fool is [a] present destruction.
10:15The rich man's goods are his strong city:but the fear of the needy is their poverty.
10:16The labor of the righteous tends to life:but the revenues of the wicked to sin.
10:17He that regards instruction, is in the way of life:but he that refuses correction, goes out of the way.
10:18He that dissembls hatred with lying lips, and he that hides slander, is [a] fool.
10:19In many words there cannot want iniquity:but he that restrains his lips, is wise.
10:20The tongue of the just man is as fined silver:but the heart of the wicked is little worth.
10:21The lips of the righteous do feed many:but fools shall die for want of wisdom.
10:22The blessing of YHWH, it makes rich, and he does add no sorrows with it.
10:23It is as [a] pastime to [a] fool to do wickedly:but wisdom is understanding to [a] man.
10:24That which the wicked fears, shall come upon him:but God will granted the desire of the righteous.
10:25As the whirlwind passes, so is the wicked no more:but the righteous is as an everlasting foundation.
10:26As vinegar is to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the slothful to them that send him.
10:27The fear of YHWH increass the days:but the years of the wicked shall be diminished.
10:28The patient abiding of the righteous shall be gladness:but the hope of the wicked shall perish.
10:29The way of YHWH is strength to the upright man:but fear shall be for the workers of iniquity.
10:30The righteous shall never be removed:but the wicked shall not dwell in the land.
10:31The mouth of the just shall be fruitful in wisdom:but the tongue of the froward shall be cut out.
10:32The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable:but the mouth of the wicked speaks froward things.
Chapter 11
11:1False balances are an abomination to YHWH:but [a] perfect weight pleases him.
11:2When pride comes, then comes shame:but with the lowly is wisdom.
11:3The uprightness of the just shall guide them:but the frowardness of the transgressers shall destroy them.
11:4Riches avail not in the day of wrath:but righteousness delivers from death.
11:5The righteousness of the upright shall direct his way:but the wicked shall fall in his own wickedness.
11:6The righteousness of the just shall deliver them:but the transgressers shall be taken in their own wickedness.
11:7When [a] wicked man dies, his hope perishes, and the hope of the unjust shall perish.
11:8The righteous escaps out of trouble, and the wicked shall come in his stead.
11:9An hypocrite with his mouth hurts his neighbor:but the righteous shall be delivered by knowledge.
11:10In the prosperity of the righteous the city rejoices, and when the wicked perish, there is joy.
11:11By the blessing of the righteous, the city is exalted:but it is subverted by the mouth of the wicked.
11:12He that despises his neighbor, is destitute of wisdom:but [a] man of understanding will keep silence.
11:13He that goes about as [a] slanderer, discovers [a] secret:but he that is of [a] faithful heart conceals [a] matter.
11:14Where no counsel is, the people fall:but where many counselors are, there is health.
11:15He shall be sore vexed, that is surety for [a] stranger, and he that hates surety, is sure.
11:16[A] gracious woman retains honor, and the strong men attain riches.
11:17He that is merciful, rewards his own soul:but he that troubles his own flesh, is cruel.
11:18The wicked works [a] deceitful work:but he that sows righteousness, shall receive [a] sure reward.
11:19As righteousness leads to life:so he that follows evil, seeks his own death.
11:20They that are of [a] froward heart, are abomination to YHWH:but they that are upright in their way, are his delight.

11:25The liberal person shall have plenty:and he that waters, shall also have rain.
11:26He that withdraws the corn, the people will curse him:but blessing shall be upon the head of him that sells corn.
11:27He that seeks good things, gets favor:but he that seeks evil, it shall come to him.
11:28He that trusts in his riches, shall fall:but the righteous shall flourish as [a] leaf.
11:29He that troubles his own house, shall inherit the wind, and the fool shall be servant to the wise in heart.

14:31He that oppresses the poor, reproves him that made him:but he honors him, that has mercy on the poor.
14:32The wicked shall be cast away for his malice:but the righteous has hope in his death.

Chapter 15
15:1[A] soft answer puts away wrath:but grievous words stir up anger.
15:2The tongue of the wise uses knowledge aright:but the mouth of fools babbls out foolishness.

15:10Instruction is evil to him that forsakes the way,and he that hates correction, shall die.
15:11Hell and destruction are before YHWH:how much more the hearts of the sons of men?
15:12[A] scorner loves not him that rebukes him, neither will he go to the wise.
15:13[A] joyful heart makes [a] cheerful countenance:but by the sorrow of the heart the mind is heavy.
15:14The heart of him that has understanding, seeks knowledge:but the mouth of the fool is fed with foolishness.
15:15All the days of the afflicted are evil:but [a] good conscience is [a] continual feast.
15:16Better is [a] little with the fear of YHWH, than great treasure, and trouble therewith.
15:17Better is [a] dinner of green herbs where love is, than [a] stalled ox and hatred therewith.
15:18An angry man stirs up strife:but he that is slow to wrath, appeass strife.
15:19The way of [a] slothful man is as [a] hedge of thorns:but the way of the righteous is plain.
15:20[A] wise son rejoices the father:but [a] foolish man despises his mother.
15:21Foolishness is joy to him that is destitute of understanding:but [a] man of understanding walks uprightly.
15:22Without counsel thoughts come to nought:but in the multitude of counselors there is steadfastness.
15:23[A] joy comes to [a] man by the answer of his mouth:and how good is [a] word in due season?
15:24The way of life is on high to the prudent, to avoid from hell beneath.
15:25YHWH will destroy the house of the proud men:but he will stablish the borders of the widow.
15:26The thoughts of the wicked are abomination to YHWH:but the pure have pleasant words.
15:27He that is greedy of gain, troubles his own house:but he that hates gifts, shall live.
15:28The heart of the righteous studies to answer:but the wicked man's mouth babbls evil things.
15:29YHWH is far off from the wicked:but he hears the prayer of the righteous.
15:30The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, and [a] good name makes the bones fat.
15:31The ear that hearkens to the correction of life, shall lodge among the wise.
15:32He that refuses instruction, despises his own soul:but he that heeds correction, gets understanding.
15:33The fear of YHWH is the instruction of wisdom:and before honor, goes humility.
Chapter 16
16:1The preparations of the heart are in man:but the answer of the tongue is of YHWH.
16:2All the ways of [a] man are clean in his own eyes:but YHWH ponders the spirits.
16:3Commit your works to YHWH,and your thoughts shall be directed.
16:4YHWH has made all things for his own sake:yes, even the wicked for the day of evil.
16:5All that are proud in heart, are an abomination to YHWH:though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.
16:6By mercy and truth iniquity shall be forgiven, and by the fear of YHWH they depart from evil.
16:7When the ways of [a] man please YHWH, he will make also his enemies at peace with him.
16:8Better is [a] little with righteousness, than great revenues without equity.
16:9The heart of man purposes his way:but YHWH does direct his steps.
16:10[A] divine sentence shall be in the lips of the King:his mouth shall not transgress in judgment.
16:11[A] true weight and balance are of YHWH:all the weights of the bag are his work.
16:12It is an abomination to Kings to commit wickedness:for the throne is established by justice.
16:13Righteous lips are the delight of Kings, and the King loves him that speaks right things.
16:14The wrath of [a] King is as messengers of death:but [a] wise man will pacify it.
16:15In the light of the Kings countenance is life:and his favor is as [a] cloud of the latter rain.
16:16How much better is it to get wisdom than gold? And to get understanding, is more to be desired then silver.
16:17The the of the righteous is to decline from evil, and he keeps his soul, that keeps his way.
16:18Pride goes before destruction, and [a] high mind before the fall.
16:19Better it is to be of humble mind with the lowly, than to divide the spoils with the proud.
16:20He that is wise in his business, shall find good:and he that trusts in YHWH, he is blessed.
16:21The wise in heart shall be called prudent:and the sweetness of the lips shall increase doctrine.
16:22Understanding is wellspring of life to them that have it:and the instruction of fools is folly.
16:23The heart of the wise his his mouth wisely, and adds doctrine to his lips.
16:24Fair words are as [a] honey combe, sweetness to the soul, and health to the bones.
16:25There is [a] way that seems right to man:but the issue thereof are the ways of death.
16:26The person that travails, travails for himself:for his mouth craves it of him.
16:27[A] wicked man digs up evil, and in his lips is like burning fire.
16:28[A] froward person sows strife:and [a] tale teller makes division among princes.
16:29[A] wicked man deceives his neighbor, and leads him into the way that is not good.
16:30He shuts his eyes to devise wickedness:he moves his lips, and brings evil to pass.
16:31Age is [a] crown of glory, when it is found in the way of righteousness.
16:32He that is slow to anger, is better than the mighty man:and he that rules his own mind, is better than he that is [a] city.
16:33The lot is cast into the lap:but the whole disposition thereof is of YHWH.
Chapter 17
17:1Better is [a] dry morsel, if peace be with it, than [a] house full of sacrifices with strife.
17:2[A] discrete servant shall have rule over [a] lewd son,and he shall divide the heritage among the brethren.
17:3As is the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold, so YHWH tries the hearts.
17:4The wicked gives heed to false lips, and [a] liar hearkens to the naughty tongue.
17:5He that mocks the poor, reproaches him, that made him:and he that rejoices at destruction, shall not be unpunished.
17:6Children's children are the crown of the elders:and the glory of the children are their fathers.
17:7High talk becomes not [a] fool, much less [a] lying talk [a] prince.
17:8[A] reward is as [a] stone pleasant in the eyes of them that have it:it prospers, wherever it turns.
17:9He that covers [a] transgression, seeks love:but he that repeats [a] matter, separates the prince.
17:10[A] reproof enters more into him that has understanding, than [a] hundred stripes into [a] fool.
17:11[A] seditious person seeks only evil, and [a] cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
17:12It is better for [a] man to meet [a] bear robbed of her whelps, than [a] fool in his folly.
17:13He that rewards evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
17:14The beginning of strife is as one that opens the waters:therefore or the contention be medled with, leave off.
17:15He that justifies the wicked, and he that condemns the just, even they both are abomination to YHWH.
17:16Wherefore is there [a] price in the hand of the fool to get wisdom, and he has none heart?
17:17[A] friend loves at all times:and [a] brother is born for adversity.
17:18[A] man destitute of understanding, touches the hand, and becomes surety for his neighbor.
17:19He loves transgression, that loves strife:and he that exalts his gate, seeks destruction.
17:20The froward heart finds no good:and he that has [a] naughty tongue, shall fall into evil.
17:21He that begets [a] fool, gets himself sorrow, and the father of [a] fool can have no joy.
17:22[A] joyful heart causes good health:but [a] sorrowful mind dries the bones.
17:23[A] wicked man takes [a] gift out of the bosom to wrest the ways of judgment.
17:24Wisdom is in the face of him that has understanding:but the eyes of [a] fool are in the corners of the world.
17:25[A] foolish son is [a] grief to his father, and [a] heaviness to her that bare him.
17:26Surely it is not good to condemn the just, nor that you princes should smite such for equity.
17:27He that has knowledge, spars his words, and [a] man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
17:28Even [a] fool (when he holds his peace) is counted wise, and he that shuts his lips, prudent.
Chapter 18
18:1For the desire thereof he will separate himself to seek it,and occupy himself in all wisdom.
18:2[A] fool has no delight in understanding:but that his heart may be discovered.
18:3When the wicked comes, then comes contempt, and with the vile man reproach.
18:4The words of [a] man's mouth are like deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom is like [a] flowing river.
18:5It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to cause the righteous to fall in judgment.
18:6[A] fools lips come with strife, and his mouth calls for stripes.
18:7[A] fools mouth is his own destruction, and his lips are [a] snare for his soul.
18:8The words of [a] tale bearer are as flatterings, and they go down into the bowels of the belly.
18:9He also that is slothful in his work, is even the brother of him that is [a] great waster.
18:10The Name of YHWH is [a] strong tower:the righteous runs to it,and is exalted.
18:11The rich man's riches are his strong city:and as [a] high wall in his imagination.
18:12Before destruction the heart of [a] man is haughty, and before glory goes lowliness.
18:13He that answers [a] matter before he hear it, it is folly and shame to him.
18:14The spirit of [a] man will sustain his infirmity:but [a] wounded spirit who can bear it?
18:15[A] wise heart gets knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks learning.
18:16[A] man's gift enlargs him,and leads him before great men.
18:17He that is first in his own cause, is just:then comes his neighbor, and makes inquiry of him.
18:18The lot causes contentions to cease, and makes [a] partition among the mighty.
18:19[A] brother offended is harder to win then [a] strong city, and their contentions are like the bar of [a] palace.
18:20With the fruit of [a] man's mouth shall his belly be satisfied, and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.
18:21Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they that love it, shall eat the fruit thereof.
18:22He that finds [a] wife, finds [a] good thing, and receives favor of YHWH.
18:23The poor speaks with prayers:but the rich answers roughly.
18:24[A] man that has friends, ought to show himself friendly:for [a] friend is nearer then [a] brother.
Chapter 19
19:1Better is the poor that walks in his uprightness, than he that abuss his lips, and is [a] fool.
19:2For without knowledge the mind is not good, and he that hastens with his feet, sins.
19:3The foolishness of [a] man perverts his way,and his heart frets against YHWH.
19:4Riches gather many friends:but the poor is separated from his neighbor.
19:5[A] false witness shall not be unpunished:and he that speaks lies, shall not escape.
19:6Many reverence the face of the prince, and every man is friend to him that gives gifts.
19:7All the brethren of the poor do hate him:how much more will his friends depart far from him? Though he be instant with words, yet they will not.
19:8He that possesses understanding, loves his own soul, and keeps wisdom to find goodness.
19:9[A] false witness shall not be unpunished:and he that speaks lies, shall perish.
19:10Pleasure is not comely for [a] fool, much less for [a] servant to have rule over princes.
19:11The discretion of man deferrs his anger:and his glory is to pass by an offence.
19:12The Kings wrath is like the roaring of [a] lyon:but his favor is like the dew upon you grass.
19:13[A] foolish son is the calamity of his father, and the contentions of [a] wife are like [a] continual dropping.
19:14House and riches are the inheritance of the fathers:but [a] prudent wife comes of YHWH.
19:15Slothfulness causes to fall asleep, and [a] deceitful person shall be affamished.
19:16He that keeps the commandment, keeps his own soul:but he that despises his ways, shall die.
19:17He that has mercy upon the poor, lends to YHWH:and the Lord will recompense him that which he has given.
19:18Chasten your son while there is hope, and let not your soul spare for his murmuring.
19:19[A] man of much anger shall suffer punishment:and though you deliver him, yet will his anger come again.
19:20Hear counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter end.
19:21Many devises are in [a] man's heart:but the counsel of YHWH shall stand.
19:22That that is to be desired of [a] man, is his goodness, and [a] poor man is better than [a] liar.
19:23The fear of YHWH leads to life:and he that is filled therewith, shall continue, and shall not be visited with evil.
19:24The slothful hides his hand in his bosom, and will not put it to his mouth again.
19:25Smite [a] scorner, and the foolish will beware:and reprove the prudent, and he will understand knowledge.
19:26He that destroys his father, or chases away his mother, is [a] lewd and shameful child.
19:27My son, hear no more the instruction, that causes to err from the words of knowledge.
19:28[A] wicked witness mocks at judgment, and the mouth of the wicked swallows up iniquity.
19:29But judgments are prepared for the scorners, and stripes for the back of the fools.
Chapter 20
20:1Wine is [a] mocker and strong drink is raging:and whoever is deceived thereby, is not wise.
20:2The fear of the King is like the roaring of [a] lyon:he that provokes him to anger, sins against his own soul.
20:3It is [a] man's honor to cease from strife:but every fool will be medling.
20:4The slothful will not plow, because of winter:therefore shall he beg in summer, but have nothing.
20:5The counsel in the heart of man is like deep waters:but [a] man that has understanding, will draw it out.
20:6Many men will boast, every one of his own goodness:but who can find [a] faithful man?
20:7He that walks in his integrity, is just:and blessed shall his children be after him.
20:8[A] King that sits in the throne of judgment, chases away all evil with his eyes.
20:9Who can say, [I] have made my heart clean, [I] am clean from my sin?
20:10Diverse weights, and diverse measures, both these are even abomination to YHWH.
20:11[A] child also is known by his doings, whether his work be pure and right.
20:12YHWH has made both these, even the ear to hear, and the eye to see.
20:13Love not sleep lest you come to poverty:open your eyes, and you shall be satisfied with bread.
20:14It is naught, it is naught, says the buyer:but when he is gone apart, he boasts.
20:15There is gold, and [a] multitude of precious stones:but the lips of knowledge are [a] precious jewel.
20:16Take his garment, that is surety for [a] stranger, and [a] pledge of him for the stranger.
20:17The bread of deceit is sweet to [a] man:but afterward his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
20:18Establish the thoughts by counsel:and by counsel make war.
20:19He that goes about as [a] slanderer, discovers secrets:therefore meddle not with him that flatters with his lips.
20:20He that curses his father or his mother, his light shall be put out in obscure darkness.
20:21An heritage is hastily gotten at the beginning, but the end thereof shall not be blessed.
20:22Say not you, [I] will recompense evil:but wait upon YHWH,and he shall save you.
20:23Diverse weights are an abomination to YHWH,and deceitful balances are not good.
20:24The steps of man are ruled by YHWH:how can [a] man then understand his own way?
20:25It is [a] destruction for [a] man to devour that which is sanctified, and after the vows to inquire.
20:26[A] wise King scatters the wicked, and causes the wheel to turn over them.
20:27The light of YHWH is the breath of man,and searches all the bowels of the belly.
20:28Mercy and truth preserve the King:for his throne shall be established with mercy.
20:29The beauty of young men is their strength, and the glory of the aged is the gray head.
20:30The blueness of the wound serves to purge the evil, and the stripes within the bowels of the belly.
Chapter 21
21:1The Kings heart is in the hand of YHWH, as the rivers of waters:he turns it wherever it pleases him.
21:2Every way of [a] man is right in his own eyes:but YHWH ponders the hearts.
21:3To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to YHWH than sacrifice.
21:4[A] haughty look, and [a] proud heart, which is the light of the wicked, is sin.
21:5The thoughts of the diligent do surely bring abundance:but whoever is hasty, comes surely to poverty.
21:6The gathering of treasures by [a] deceitful tongue is vanity tossed to and from of them that seek death.
21:7The robbery of the wicked shall destroy them:for they have refused to execute judgment.
21:8The way of some is perverted and strange:but of the pure man, his work is right.
21:9It is better to dwell in [a] corner of the house top, than with [a] contentious woman in [a] wide house.
21:10The soul of the wicked wishes evil:and his neighbor has no favor in his eyes.
21:11When the scorner is punished, the foolish is wise:and when one instructs the wise, he will receive knowledge.
21:12The righteous teaches the house of the wicked:but God overthrows the wicked for their evil.
21:13He that shuts his ear at the crying of the poor, he shall also cry and not be heard.
21:14[A] gift in secret pacifies anger, and [a] gift in the bosom great wrath.
21:15It is joy to the just to do judgment:but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.
21:16[A] man that wanders out of the way of wisdom, shall remain in the congregation of the dead.
21:17He that loves pastime, shall be [a] poor man:and he that loves wine and oil, shall not be rich.
21:18The wicked shall be [a] ransom for the just, and the ransom for the righteous.
21:19It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with [a] contentious and angry woman.
21:20In the house of the wise is [a] pleasant treasure and oil:but [a] foolish man devours it.
21:21He that follows after righteousness and mercy, shall find life, righteousness, and glory.
21:22[A] wise man goes up into the city of the mighty, and casts down the strength of the confidence thereof.
21:23He that keeps his mouth and his tongue, keeps his soul from afflictions.
21:24Proud, haughty and scornful is his name that works in his arrogant wrath.
21:25The desire of the slothful slays him:for his hands refuse to work.
21:26He covets evermore greedily, but the righteous gives and spars not.
21:27The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination:how much more when he brings it with [a] wicked mind?
21:28[A] false witness shall perish:but he that hears, speaks continually.
21:29[A] wicked man hardens his face:but the just, he will direct his way.
21:30There is no wisdom, neither understanding, nor counsel against YHWH.
21:31The horse is prepared against the day of battle:but salvation is of YHWH.
Chapter 22
22:1[A] good name is to be chosen above great riches, and loving favor is above silver and above gold.
22:2The rich and poor meet together:YHWH is the maker of them all.
22:3[A] prudent man sees the plague, and hides himself:but the foolish go on still, and are punished.
22:4The reward of humility, and the fear of God is riches, and glory, and life.
22:5Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward:but he that regards his soul, will depart far from them.
22:6Teach [a] child in the trade of his way,and when he is old, he shall not depart from it.
22:7The rich rules the poor, and the borrower is servant to the man that lends.
22:8He that sows iniquity, shall reap affliction, and the rod of his anger shall fail.
22:9He that has [a] good eye, he shall be blessed:for he gives of his bread to the poor.
22:10Cast out the scorner, and strife shall go out:so contention and reproach shall cease.
22:11He that loves pureness of heart for the grace of his lips, the King shall be his friend.
22:12The eyes of YHWH preserve knowledge:but he overthrows the words of the transgressour.
22:13The slothful man says, [A] lyon is without, [I] shall be slain in the street.
22:14The mouth of strange women is as [a] deep pit:he with whom YHWH is angry, shall fall therein.
22:15Foolishness is bound in the heart of [a] child:but the rod of correction shall drive it away from him.
22:16He that oppresses the poor to increase himself, and gives to the rich, shall surely come to poverty.
22:17Incline your ear,and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart to my knowledge.
22:18For it shall be pleasant, if you keep them in your belly, and if they be directed together in your lips.
22:19That your confidence may be in YHWH, [I] have showed you this day:you therefore take heed.
22:20Have not [I] written to you three times in counsels and knowledge,
22:21That [I] might show you the assurance of the words of truth to answer the words of truth to them that send to you?
22:22Rob not the poor, because he is poor, neither oppress the afflicted in judgment.
22:23For YHWH will defend their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoil them.
22:24Make no friendship with an angry man, neither go with the furious man,
22:25Lest you learn his ways, and receive destruction to your soul.
22:26Be not you of them that touch the hand, nor among them that are surety for debts.
22:27If you have nothing to pay, why cause you that he should take your bed from under you?
22:28You shall not remove the ancient bounds which your fathers have made.
22:29You see that [a] diligent man in his business stands before Kings, and stands not before the base sort.
Chapter 23
23:1When you sit to eat with [a] ruler, consider diligently what is before you,
23:2And put the knife to your throat, if you be [a] man given to the appetite.
23:3Be not desirous of his dainty meats:for it is [a] deceptive meat.
23:4Travail not too much to be rich:but cease from your wisdom.
23:5Will you cast your eyes upon it, which is nothing? For riches takes her to her wings, as an eagle, and flies into the heaven.
23:6Eat you not the bread of him that has an evil eye, neither desire his dainty meats.
23:7For as though he thought it in his heart, so will he say to you, Eat and drink:but his heart is not with you.
23:8You shall vomit your morsels that you have eaten, and you shall lose your sweet words.
23:9Speak not in the ears of [a] fool:for he will despise the wisdom of your words.
23:10Remove not the ancient bounds, and enter not into the fields of the fatherless.
23:11For he that redeems them, is mighty:he will defend their cause against you.
23:12Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge.
23:13Withhold not correction from the child:if you smite him with the rod, he shall not die.
23:14You shall smite him with the rod,and shall deliver his soul from hell.
23:15My son, if your heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, and [I] also.
23:16And my reins shall rejoice, when your lips speak righteous things.
23:17Let not your heart be envious against sinners:but let it be in the fear of YHWH continually.
23:18For surely there is an end,and your hope shall not be cut off.
23:19O you my son, hear, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.
23:20Keep not company with drunkards, nor with gluttons.
23:21For the drunkard and the glutton shall be poor, and the sleeper shall be clothed with rags.
23:22Obey your father that has begotten you,and despise not your mother when she is old.
23:23Buy the truth,but sell it not:likewise wisdom,and instruction,and understanding.
23:24The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice, and he that begets [a] wise child, shall have joy of him.
23:25Your father and your mother shall be glad, and she that bare you shall rejoice.
23:26My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes delight in my ways.
23:27For [a] whore is as [a] deep ditch, and [a] strange woman is as [a] narrow pit.
23:28Also she lies in wait as for [a] pray, and she increases the increases among men.
23:29To whom is woe? To whom is sorrow? To whom is strife? To whom is murmuring? To whom are wounds without cause? And to whom is the redness of the eyes?
23:30Even to them that tarry long at the wine, to them that go,and seek mixed wine.
23:31Look not you upon the wine, when it is red,and when it shows his color in the cup, or goes down pleasantly.
23:32In the end thereof it will bite like [a] serpent, and hurt like [a] cockatrice.
23:33Your eyes shall look upon strange women, and your heart shall speak lewd things.
23:34And you shall be as one that sleeps in the midst of the sea,and as he that sleeps in the top of the mast.
23:35They have stricken me, shall you say,but [I] was not sick:they have beaten me,but [I] knew not, when [I] awoke:therefore will [I] seek it yet still.
Chapter 24
24:1Be not you envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.
24:2For their heart imagins destruction, and their lips speak mischief.
24:3Through wisdom is [a] house built, and with understanding it is established.
24:4And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious, and pleasant riches.
24:5[A] wise man is strong:for [a] man of understanding increases his strength.
24:6For with counsel you shall enterprise your war,and in the multitude of them that can give counsel, is health.
24:7Wisdom is high to [a] fool:therefore he can not open his mouth in the gate.
24:8He that imagins to do evil, men shall call him an to of wickedness.
24:9The wicked thought of [a] fool is sin,and the scorner is an abomination to men.
24:10If you be faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small.
24:11Deliver them that are drawn to death:will you not preserve them that are led to be slain?
24:12If you say, Behold, we knew not of it:he that ponders the hearts, does not he understand it? And he that keeps your soul, knows he it not? Will not he also recompense every man according to his works?
24:13My son, eat honey, for it is good, and the honey combe, for it is sweet to your mouth.
24:14So shall the knowledge of wisdom be to your soul, if you find it,and there shall be an end,and your hope shall not be cut off.
24:15Lay no wait, O wicked man, against the house of the righteous, and spoil not his resting place.
24:16For [a] just man falls seven times, and rises again:but the wicked fall into mischief.
24:17Be you not glad when your enemy falls, and let not your heart rejoice when he stumbles,
24:18Lest YHWH see it,and it displease him,and he turn his wrath from him.
24:19Fret not yourself because of the malicious, neither be envious at the wicked.
24:20For there shall be no end of plagues to the evil man:the light of the wicked shall be put out.
24:21My son fear YHWH,and the King, and meddle not with them that are seditious.
24:22For their destruction shall rise suddenly, and who knows the ruin of them both?
24:23ALSO THESE THINGS PERTAIN TO THE WISE, It is not good to have respect of any person in judgment.
24:24He that says to the wicked, You are righteous, him shall the people curse, and the multitude shall abhor him.
24:25But to them that rebuke him, shall be pleasure, and upon them shall come the blessing of goodness.
24:26They shall kiss the lips of him that answers upright words.
24:27Prepare your work without, and make ready your things in the field, and after, build your house.
24:28Be not a witness against your neighbor without cause:for will you deceive with your lips?
24:29Say not, [I] will do to him, as he has done to me, [I] will recompense every man according to his work.
24:30[I] passed by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man destitute of understanding.
24:31And lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down.
24:32Then [I] beheld,and [I] considered it well:[I] looked upon it,and received instruction.
24:33Yet [a] little sleep, [a] little slumber, [a] little folding of the hands to sleep.
24:34So your poverty comes as one that travails by the way,and your necessity like an armed man.
Chapter 25
25:1THESE ARE ALSO PARABLES of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah King of Judah copied out.
25:2The glory of Elohim is to conceal [a] thing secret:but the Kings honor is to search out [a] thing.
25:3The heaves in height, and the earth in deepness, and the Kings heart can no man search out.
25:4Take the dross from the silver, and there shall proceed [a] vessel for the finer.
25:5Take away the wicked from the King, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.
25:6Boast not yourself before the King, and stand not in the place of great men.
25:7For it is better, that it be said to you, Come up here, than you to be put lower in the presence of the prince whom your eyes have seen.
25:8Go not forth hastily to strife, lest you know not what to do in the end thereof, when your neighbor has put you to shame.
25:9Debate your matter with your neighbor, and discover not the secret to another,
25:10Lest he that hears it put you to shame, and your infamy do not cease.
25:11[A] word spoken in his place, is like apples of gold with pictures of silver.
25:12He that reproves the wise, and the obedient ear, is as [a] golden earring and an ornament of fine gold.
25:13As the cold of the snow in the time of harvest, so is [a] faithful messenger to them that send him:for he refreshes the soul of his masters.
25:14[A] man that boasts of false liberality, is like clouds and wind without rain.
25:15[A] Prince is pacified by staying of anger, and [a] soft tongue breaks the bones.
25:16If you have found honey, eat that is sufficient for you, lest you be overfull, and vomit it.
25:17Withdraw your foot from your neighbors house, lest he be weary of you,and hate you.
25:18[A] man that bears false witness against his neighbor, is like [a] hammer and [a] sword, and [a] sharp arrow.
25:19Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble, is like [a] broken tooth and [a] sliding foot.
25:20He that takes away the garment in the cold season, is like vinegar poured upon one, or like him that sings songs to [a] heavy heart.
25:21If he that hates you be hungry, give him bread to eat,and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink.
25:22For you shall lay coles upon his head, and YHWH shall recompense you.
25:23As the North wind drives away the rain, so does an angry countenance the slandering tongue.
25:24It is better to dwell in [a] corner of the house top, than with [a] contentious woman in [a] wide house.
25:25As are the cold waters to [a] weary soul, so is good news from [a] far country.
25:26[A] righteous man falling down before the wicked, is like [a] troubled well, and [a] corrupt spring.
25:27It is not good to eat much honey:so to search their own glory is not glory.
25:28[A] man that refrains not his appetite, is like [a] city which is broken down and without walls.
Chapter 26
26:1As the snow in the summer, and as the rain in the harvest are not meet, so is honor unseemly for [a] fool.
26:2As the sparrow by flying, and the swallow by flying escape, so the curse that is cause, shall not come.
26:3To the horse belongs [a] whip, to the ass [a] bridle, and [a] rod to the fools back.
26:4Answer not [a] fool according to his foolishness, lest you also be like him.
26:5Answer a fool according to his foolishness, lest he be wise in his own conceit.
26:6He that sends [a] message by the hand of [a] fool, is as he that cuts off the feet, and drinks iniquity.
26:7As they that lift up the legs of the lame, so is [a] parable in [a] fools mouth.
26:8As the closing up of [a] precious stone in [a] heap of stones, so is he that gives glory to [a] fool.
26:9As [a] thorn standing up in the hand of [a] drunkard, so is [a] parable in the mouth of fools.
26:10The excellent that formed all things, both rewards the fool and rewards the transgressor.
26:11As [a] dog turns again to his own vomit, so [a] fool turns to his foolishness.
26:12See you [a] man wise in his own conceit? More hope is of [a] fool than of him.
26:13The slothful man says, [A] lyon is in the way:[a] lyon is in the streets.
26:14As the door turns upon his hinges, so does the slothful man upon his bed.
26:15The slothful hides his hand in his bosom, and it grieves him to put it again to his mouth.
26:16The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit, then seven men that can render [a] reason.
26:17He that passes by and meddles with the strife that belongs not to him, is as one that takes [a] dog by the ears.
26:18As he that firebrands himself mad, casts fire brands, arrows, and mortal things,
26:19So deals the deceitful man with his friend and says, Am not [I] in sport?
26:20Without wood the fire is quenched, and without [a] talebearer strife ceases.
26:21As you cole makes burning coles, and wood [a] fire, so the contentious man is apt to kindle strife.
26:22The words of [a] tale bearer are as flatterings, and they go down into the bowels of the belly.
26:23As silver dross overlaid upon [a] heart, so are burning lips, and an evil heart.
26:24He that hates, will counterfeit with his lips, but in his heart he lays up deceit.
26:25Though he speak favorably, believe him not:for there are seven abominations in his heart.
26:26Hatred may be covered by deceit:but the malice thereof shall be discovered in the congregation.
26:27He that digs [a] pit shall fall therein, and he that rolls [a] stone, it shall return to him.
26:28[A] false tongue hates the afflicted, and [a] flattering mouth causes ruin.
Chapter 27
27:1Boast not yourself of Tomorrow:for you know not what [a] day may bring forth.
27:2Let another man praise you,and not your own mouth:[a] stranger, and not your own lips.
27:3[A] stone is heavy, and the sand weighty:but [a] fools wrath is heavier than them both.
27:4Anger is cruel, and wrath is raging:but who can stand before envy?
27:5Open rebuke is better than secret love.
27:6The wounds of [a] lover are faithful, and the kisses of an enemy are pleasant.
27:7The person that is full, despises [a] honey combe:but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
27:8As [a] bird that wanders from her nest, so is [a] man that wanders from his own place.
27:9As ointment and perfume rejoice the heart, so does the sweetness of [a] man's friend by hearty counsel.
27:10Your own friend and your fathers friend forsake you not:neither enter into your brothers house in the day of your calamity:for better is [a] neighbor that is near, than [a] brother far off.
27:11My son, be wise, and rejoice my heart, that [I] may answer him that reproaches me.
27:12[A] prudent man sees the plague, and hides himself:but the foolish go on still, and are punished.
27:13Take his garment that is surety for [a] stranger, and [a] pledge of him for the stranger.
27:14He that prayss his friend with [a] loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted to him as [a] curse.
27:15[A] continual dropping in the day of rain, and [a] contentious woman are alike.
27:16He that hides her, hides the wind, and she is as the oil in his right hand, that utters itself.
27:17Iron sharpens iron, so does man sharpen the face of his friend.
27:18He that keeps the fig tree, shall eat the fruit thereof:so he that waits upon his master, shall come to honor.
27:19As in water face answers to face, so the heart of man to man.
27:20The grave and destruction can never be full, so the eyes of man can never be satisfied.
27:21As is the fining pot for silver and the furnace for gold, so is every man according to his dignity.
27:22Though you should bray [a] fool in [a] mortar among wheat brayed with [a] pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.
27:23Be diligent to know you state of your flock, and take heed to the herds.
27:24For riches remain not always, nor the crown from generation to generation.
27:25The hey discovers itself, and the grass appears, and the herbs of the mountains are gathered.
27:26The lambs are for your clothing, and the goats are the price of the field.
27:27And let the milk of the goats be sufficient for your food, for the food of your family, and for the sustenance of your maids.
Chapter 28
28:1The wicked flee when none pursues:but the righteous are bold as [a] lyon.
28:2For the transgression of the land there are many princes thereof:but by [a] man of understanding and knowledge [a] realm likewise endures long.
28:3[A] poor man, if he oppress the poor, is like [a] raging rain, that leaves no food.
28:4They that forsake the Law, praise the wicked:but they that keep the Law, set themselves against them.
28:5Wicked men understand not judgment:but they that seek YHWH understand all things.
28:6Better is the poor that walks in his uprightness, than he that perverts his ways, though he be rich.
28:7He that keeps the Law, is [a] child of understanding:but he that feeds the gluttons, shams his father.
28:8He that increass his riches by usury and interest, gathers them for him that will be merciful to the poor.
28:9He that turns away his ear from hearing the Law, even his prayer shall be abominable.
28:10He that causes the righteous to go astray by an evil way, shall fall into his own pit,and the upright shall inherit good things.
28:11The rich man is wise in his own conceit:but the poor that has understanding, can try him.
28:12When righteous men rejoice, there is great glory:but when the wicked come up, the man is tried.
28:13He that hides his sins, shall not prosper:but he that confesses, and forsaks them, shall have mercy.
28:14Blessed is the man that fears always:but he that hardens his heart, shall fall into evil.
28:15As [a] roaring lyon, and [a] hungry bear, so is [a] wicked ruler over the poor people.
28:16[A] prince destitute of understanding, is also [a] great oppressor:but he that hates covetousness, shall prolong his days.
28:17[A] man that does violence against the blood of [a] person, shall flee to the grave, and they shall not stay him.
28:18He that walks uprightly, shall be saved:but he that is froward in his ways, shall once fall.
28:19He that tills his land, shall be satisfied with bread:but he that follows the idle, shall be filled with poverty.
28:20[A] faithful man shall abound in blessings, and he that makes haste to be rich, shall not be innocent.
28:21To have respect of persons is not good:for that man will transgress for [a] piece of bread.
28:22[A] man with [a] wicked eye hasts to riches, and knows not, that poverty shall come upon him.
28:23He that rebukes [a] man, shall find more favor at length, than he that flatters with his tongue.
28:24He that robbs his father and mother, and says, It is no transgression, is the companion of [a] man that destroys.
28:25He that is of [a] proud heart, stirrs up strife:but he that trusts in YHWH, shall be fat.
28:26He that trusts in his own heart, is [a] fool:but he that walks in wisdom, shall be delivered.
28:27He that gives to the poor, shall not lack:but he that hides his eyes, shall have many curses.
28:28When the wicked rise up, men hide themselves:but when they perish, the righteous increase.
Chapter 29
29:1[A] man that hardens his neck when he is rebuked, shall suddenly be destroyed and can not be cured.
29:2When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice:but when the wicked bears rule, the people sigh.
29:3[A] man that loves wisdom, rejoices his father:but he that feeds harlots, wastes his substance.
29:4[A] King by judgment mainteins you country:but [a] man receiving gifts, destroys it.
29:5[A] man that flatters his neighbor, spreads [a] net for his steps.
29:6In the transgression of an evil man is his snare:but the righteous does sing and rejoice.
29:7The righteous knows the cause of the poor:but the wicked regards not knowledge.
29:8Scornful men bring [a] city into [a] snare:but wise men turn away wrath.
29:9If [a] wise man contend with [a] foolish man, whether he be angry or laugh, there is no rest.
29:10Bloody men hate him that is upright:but the just have care of his soul.
29:11[A] fool pours out all his mind:but [a] wise man keeps it in till afterward.
29:12Of [a] prince that hearkens to lies, all his servants are wicked.
29:13The poor and the usurer meet together, and YHWH lightens both their eyes.
29:14[A] King that judges the poor in truth, his throne shall be established forever.
29:15The rod and correction give wisdom:but [a] child set [a] liberty, makes his mother ashamed.
29:16When the wicked are increased, transgression increases:but the righteous shall see their fall.
29:17Correct your son and he will give you rest, and will give pleasures to your soul.
29:18Where there is no vision, the people decay:but he that keeps the Law, is blessed.
29:19[A] servant will not be chastised with words:though he understand, yet he will not answer.
29:20See you [a] man hasty in his matters? There is more hope of [a] fool, than of him.
29:21He that delicately brings up his servant from youth, at length he will be even as his son.
29:22An angry man stirs up strife, and [a] furious man abounds in transgression.
29:23The pride of [a] man shall bring him low:but the humble in spirit shall enjoy glory.
29:24He that is partner with [a] thief, hates his own soul:he hears cursing, and declares it not.
29:25The fear of man brings [a] snare:but he that trusts in YHWH, shall be exalted.
29:26Many do seek the face of the ruler:but every man's judgment comes from YHWH.
29:27[A] wicked man is abomination to the just, and he that is upright in his way, is abomination to the wicked.
Chapter 30
30:1THE WORDS OF AGUR THE SON OF JAKEH. The prophecy which the man spoke to Ithiel, even to Ithiel, and Ucal.
30:2Surely [I] am more foolish than any man,and have not the understanding of [a] man in me.
30:3For [I] have not learned wisdom, nor learned to the knowledge of holy things.
30:4Who has ascended up to heaven, and descended? Who has gathered the wind in his fist? Who has bound the waters in [a] garment? Who has established all the ends of the world? What is his name, and what is his sons name, if you can tell?
30:5Every word of God is pure:he is [a] shield to those, that trust in him.
30:6Put nothing to his words, lest he reprove you,and you be found [a] liar.
30:7Two things have [I] required of you:deny me them not before [I] die.
30:8Remove far from me vanity and lies:give me not poverty, nor riches:feed me with food convenient for me,
30:9Lest [I] be full, and deny you,and say, Who is YHWH? Or lest [I] be poor and steal, and take the Name of my Elohim in vain.
30:10Accuse not [a] servant to his master, lest he curse you, when you have offended.
30:11There is [a] generation that curses their father, and does not bless their mother.
30:12There is [a] generation that are pure in their own conceit, and yet are not washed from their filthiness.
30:13There is [a] generation, whose eyes are haughty, and their eye eyelids are lifted up.
30:14There is [a] generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaws as knives to eat up the afflicted out of the earth, and the poor from among men.
30:15The horse leech has two daughters which cry, Give, give. There be three things that will not be satisfied:yes, four that say not, It is enough.
30:16The grave, and the barren womb, the earth that cannot be satisfied with water, and the fire that says not, It is enough.
30:17The eye that mocks his father and despises the instruction of his mother, let you ravens of the valley pick it out,and the young eagles eat it.
30:18There be three things hid from me:yes, four that [I] know not,
30:19The way of an eagle in the air, the way of [a] serpent upon [a] stone, the way of [a] ship in the midst of the sea,and the way of [a] man with [a] maid.
30:20Such is the way also of an adulterous woman:she eats and wipes her mouth, and says, [I] have not committed iniquity.
30:21For three things the earth is moved:yes, for four it cannot sustain itself:
30:22For [a] servant when he reigns, and [a] fool when he is filled with meat,
30:23For the hateful woman, when she is married, and for [a] handmaid that is heir to her mistress.
30:24These be four small things in the earth, yet they are wise and full of wisdom:
30:25The pismires [a] people not strong, yet prepare they their meat in summer:
30:26The conies [a] people not mighty, yet make their houses in the rock:
30:27The grashopper has no King, yet go they forth all by bands:
30:28The spider takes hold with her hands, and is in Kings palaces.
30:29There be three things that order well their going:yes, four are comely in going,
30:30[A] lyon which is strong among beasts, and turns not at the sight of any:
30:31[A] lusty greyhound, and [a] goat, and [a] King against whom there is no rising up.
30:32If you have been foolish in lifting yourself up,and if you have thought wickedly, lay your hand upon your mouth.
30:33When one churns milk, he brings forth butter:and he that wrings his nose, causes blood to come out:so he that forcing wrath, brings forth strife.
Chapter 31
31:1THE WORDS OF KING LEMUEL:The prophecy which his mother taught him.
31:2What my son! And what the son of my womb! And what, O son of my desires!
31:3Give not your strength to women, nor your ways, which is to destroy Kings.
31:4It is not for Kings, O Lemuel, it is not for Kings to drink wine nor for princes to drink,
31:5Lest he drink and forget the decree, and change the judgment of all the children of affliction.
31:6Give you strong drink to him that is ready to perish, and wine to them that have grief of heart.
31:7Let him drink, that he may forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.
31:8Open your mouth for the dumb in the cause of all the children of destruction.
31:9Open your mouth:judge righteously,and judge the afflicted,and the poor.
31:10Who shall find [a] virtuous woman? For her price is far above the pearls.
31:11The heart of her husband trusts in her,and he shall have no need of spoil.
31:12She will do him good, and not evil all the days of her life.
31:13She seeks wool and flax, and labors cheerefully with her hands.
31:14She is like the ships of merchants:she brings her food from afar.
31:15And she rises, while it is yet night:and gives the portion to her household, and the ordinary to her maids.
31:16She considers [a] field, and gets it:and with the fruit of her hands she plants [a] vineyard.
31:17She girds her loins with strength, and strengthens her arms.
31:18She feels that her merchandise is good:her candle is not put out by night.
31:19She puts her hands to the wharf, and her hands handle the spindle.
31:20She stretches out her hand to the poor, and puts forth her hands to the needy.
31:21She fears not the snow for her family:for all her family is clothed with scarlet.
31:22She makes herself carpets:fine linen and purple is her garment.
31:23Her husband is known in the gates, when he sits with the Elders of the land.
31:24She makes sheets, and sells them, and gives girdles to the merchants.
31:25Strength and honor is her clothing, and in the latter day she shall rejoice.
31:26She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the law of grace is in her tongue.
31:27She over the ways of her household, and eats not the bread of idleness.
31:28Her children rise up,and call her blessed:her husband also shall praise her, saying,
31:29Many daughters have done virtuously:but you surmount them all.
31:30Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vanity:but [a] woman that fears YHWH, she shall be praised.
31:31Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.
